Stitched Blueberries | Mixed Media Watercolor

Stitched Blueberries explores the idea of layering, both visually and physically. Within the painting, layers of blue stripes overlap and stack along the top and bottom of the composition. At the center, a sprig of blueberries sits both beneath and above bright yellow lines, creating a contrast between the organic forms of the fruit and the more rigid, bar-like shapes surrounding them. The canvas itself is also built up in layers, with torn pieces of watercolor paper stitched onto the surface using yellow thread.

I began this piece by experimenting with layered paper before deciding on a subject. Since watercolor is one of my primary painting mediums, I wanted to explore how I could push it beyond a traditional painted surface. The idea of contrasting layers eventually led me to a complementary color palette, with blue and yellow becoming the focus. I was drawn to blueberries for their round, organic forms, which offered an interesting contrast to the rigid lines and structured shapes elsewhere in the composition. Their natural shape, paired with the texture of the torn paper, brought a sense of softness and movement to an otherwise structured painting.
